Dear representative Ilhan Omar
It is with genuine joy and deep admiration that I write to you — not as an American, but as a Somali, and as a fellow human being who has watched your journey with pride and hope. Your historic re-election to Congress fills so many of us with pride: Somali-Americans, Muslim women, and every community that has been told, for far too long, that leadership was not meant for them. Though I am not your constituent, and though I live far from your district, your victory feels personal — a triumph for a daughter of Somalia, and a light for all who share that heritage. Wherever Somalis have settled, your name has become a source of quiet celebration.
I think often of the grace with which you have carried this responsibility. You have faced hostility that no public servant should ever have to endure — outright bigotry, baseless insinuation, and rhetoric that too often crossed the line from honest disagreement into something far uglier. Such attacks are painful not only to you, but to the communities you represent, and to all of us who see in the hostility directed at you an echo of the prejudice we have known ourselves. Through it all, you have met each attack with composure, courage, and an unwavering devotion to the people you serve. That is a credit to your character, and it is an inspiration to countless people who see in you what is possible.
Your success reminds us of the very best of America — that diversity is a strength, and that the promise of that country belongs to all of its people. But beyond America, your story speaks to something universal: the dignity of every person, the right of every community to be heard, and the quiet power of perseverance in the face of contempt. In that sense, your victory belongs not only to one nation, but to our shared humanity.
Please know that you have admirers far beyond your district — across oceans and continents — cheering you on, praying for your strength, and drawing hope from your example. May you continue to serve with the same courage and grace that have brought you this far.
With heartfelt admiration and respect,
Hoachnnel editor
