SEVERING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN SOMALI AND ETHIOPIA

Diplomatic relations between countries play a crucial role in shaping the global political landscape. When two countries decide to sever their ties, it signifies a significant shift in their relationship and can have far-reaching implications. The rupture of diplomatic relations can be triggered by a variety of reasons, such as political disputes, human rights violations, or souvereinty and security concerns.

Ethiopia and Somalia have a long and complicated history, marked by conflict, interference, and strained relations. This relationship reached a breaking point on April 4, 2024, when Somalia severed its diplomatic ties with Ethiopia as a decision of last resort. This move was a culmination of decades of Ethiopian intervention in Somali affairs, which have had severe consequences for the stability and well-being of the Somali people.

One of the most significant moments in this tumultuous relationship was Ethiopia’s role in the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic in 1991. The regime of Siad Barre was ousted by Somali tribal militias, who were armed and supported by Ethiopia under Mengistu’s rule. This intervention plunged Somalia into a state of chaos, civil war, and instability that has lasted for decades.

Furthermore, Ethiopia’s actions in Somalia have exacerbated the situation by creating and arming various factions and warlords. This has led to widespread suffering, destruction, and displacement among the Somali population. Ethiopia’s involvement in Somalia’s internal affairs has only served to prolong the conflict and deepen the suffering of the Somali people.

One of the most egregious acts of Ethiopian aggression in Somalia was its invasion in 2006 under Meles Zenawi’s leadership. This invasion resulted in the deaths of thousands of Somalis and gross human rights violations. Western powers supported this invasion, which ultimately gave rise to terrorist groups such as Al-Shabab, further destabilizing the region and causing immense harm to the Somali people.

Additionally, Ethiopia has consistently disregarded the sovereignty and rights of Somalia and its regional states. Ethiopia signed a controversial Memorandum of Understanding with the breakaway entity of Somaliland, agreeing to build a military base and port on Somali territory. This move flagrantly violates international law and norms, and demonstrates Ethiopia’s reckless and unlawful behavior in its dealings with Somalia.

The recent invitation and agreements between Ethiopia and Puntland State of Somalia further highlight Ethiopia’s rogue behavior and disregard for Somali sovereignty. These actions have pushed Somalia to the brink, forcing it to sever diplomatic ties with Ethiopia as a last resort to protect its interests and assert its sovereignty.

The consequences and implications of Ethiopia’s actions in Somalia have far exceeded acceptable limits, justifying Somalia’s decision to sever diplomatic relations. It is imperative that Ethiopia abandon its lawless and rogue behavior and abide by international law, norms, and principles of respect and neighborliness.

In conclusion, the strained relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia is a result of decades of Ethiopian interference and aggression in Somali affairs. The recent severing of diplomatic ties by Somalia is a necessary step to protect its sovereignty and interests in the face of Ethiopian disregard for international norms and principles. Ethiopia must reassess its approach to Somalia and commit to respectful and neighborly relations to ensure stability and peace in the region.
