SOMALI-TURKISH MARITIME SECURITY COOPERATION

The signing, on February, 2024, of a 10-year agreement between Somalia and Turkey for the protection of Somali waters has significant implications for the region. This agreement signifies Turkey’s commitment to supporting Somalia in defending its maritime territorial rights, sovereignty, and economic interests in its waters and exclusive economic zones.

The arrival of a Turkish naval war ship in Mogadishu demonstrates Turkey’s tangible support for Somalia and its willingness to assist in safeguarding Somali waters. This move is crucial in deterring illegal activities such as piracy, illegal fishing, and maritime security threats that have plagued the region for years. By strengthening Somalia’s maritime security capabilities, Turkey is also helping to boost economic development and stability in the region.

However, it is essential to consider the context of this agreement against the backdrop of Ethiopia’s interference in Somali internal affairs. Ethiopia’s blatant attempts to undermine Somali sovereignty and integrity pose a significant threat to regional stability. The Somali government has repeatedly accused Ethiopia of supporting cecessionists, and armed groups and interfering in internal politics, which has exacerbated tensions between the two countries.

The presence of the Turkish naval war ship in Mogadishu sends a clear message to Ethiopia and other external actors that Somalia is capable of defending its territorial rights and sovereignty. Turkey’s support also helps to counterbalance the influence of other regional powers in the Horn of Africa, ensuring that Somalia’s maritime environment and interests are protected.

The significance of the Somali-Turkish agreement goes beyond maritime security. It symbolizes the strong bilateral ties between the two countries and Turkey’s commitment to supporting stability and development in Somalia. The agreement provides Somalia with much-needed assistance in equiping, training and capacity-building for its naval forces, enhancing the country’s ability to protect its maritime resources and secure its marine borders.

In conclusion, the Somali-Turkish 10-year agreement for the protection of Somali waters is a positive step towards strengthening Somalia’s maritime security and defending its maritime territorial rights. Turkey’s support is crucial in deterring external threats and promoting stability in the region. By standing with Somalia against external interference, Turkey reaffirms its commitment to supporting the sovereignty and integrity of its partner in the Horn of Africa.
