THE AFAR-ISSA CONFLICT-ETHIOPIA

Badhiwayn, Qiiqle

A significant bout of fighting broke out this morning in the Plateau of Badhiwayn and nearby mountain ranges in Western Sitti. This ongoing violence appears to be an attempt to disrupt peace talks led by the Islamic Supreme Council in Addis Ababa. The forces of Marshal Jula are reportedly maintaining peace in the majority of Federal Somali territory, but are allegedly inactive in the Somali-Afar region. There are suspicions that Marshal Jula’s troops are involved in the Issa-Afar conflict. Reports on casualties have not yet been released, and we will continue to monitor the situation.
