DEFENCE OF THE HOMELAND MUST BE GIVEN PRIORIT

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia plays a crucial role in upholding the country’s constitution, defending its sovereignty, safeguarding national unity, and ensuring the well-being of all citizens. However, recent actions and decisions by the current President have raised concerns and criticisms among constituents. Key issues include the push for constitutional rewriting without adequate consultation, the timing of such initiatives amidst national division, external threats, and internal conflicts, as well as the failure to address escalating conflicts in regions like Lasanod.

One of the primary criticisms against the President is the lack of inclusivity in the process of constitutional revision. The decision to proceed with rewriting the constitution without proper input from diverse segments of society has raised questions about the legitimacy and representativeness of the proposed changes. In a country as politically fragmented as Somalia, ensuring widespread participation and consensus-building is essential for sustainable and inclusive governance.

Moreover, the timing of the constitutional revision has been called into question, given the current challenges facing the nation. Somalia is facing security threats from groups like Al-Shabaab and tensions with neighboring countries like Ethiopia. In this volatile context, pursuing constitutional reform without addressing these pressing issues may further destabilize the country. Effective leadership requires a prioritization of the most urgent and critical issues facing the nation.

The President’s failure to address the escalating conflict in regions like Lasanod, where civilians have been subjected to violence and displacement, has damaged confidence in his ability to protect all Somali citizens. The persistence of human rights abuses in Awdal and Sool underscores the need for strong and decisive leadership that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all individuals within the country.

Furthermore, actions taken by regional leaders, such as Deni of Puntland and Bihi of Somaliland, to pursue independent agreements with foreign entities have exacerbated tensions and divisions within Somalia. Their collaboration with external actors at the expense of national unity and sovereignty has been met with condemnation and accusations of high treason. Accountability and unity among all Somali leaders are crucial to addressing the complex challenges facing the nation.

In conclusion, Somalia is at a critical juncture that requires bold and visionary leadership to navigate through current crises and move towards a more stable and inclusive future. It is imperative for the President and other political actors to prioritize the interests of the Somali people above personal or regional agendas. Unity, cooperation, and dialogue are essential to overcoming deep-rooted divisions and conflicts and realizing Somalia’s potential for peace, prosperity, and progress.
