THE DANGERS OF APPEASEMENT

The dangers of appeasement as a policy have been seen throughout history, where world powers failed to stand up to aggressive nations, leading to devastating consequences. In the case of Ethiopia’s aggressive attitude towards Somalia, in its quest for access to the sea, the lack of strong condemnation from the AU, UN, and other international organizations and nations has only emboldened Ethiopia to commit further faults.

In the historic context, appeasement has often been used as a strategy by nations to avoid conflict and maintain peace. One of the most famous examples is the appeasement of Nazi Germany by European powers in the lead-up to World War II. Instead of confronting Hitler’s aggressive actions, countries like Britain and France chose to appease him, hoping to avoid war. However, this policy only encouraged Hitler to escalate his aggression, leading to the outbreak of World War II.

In the case of Ethiopia’s aggressive attitude towards Somalia, the historical context is also relevant. Somalia has long-standing disputes with Ethiopia over territorial boundaries, particularly in the Ogaden region. Ethiopia’s quest for access to the sea through Somali territory has led to tensions between the two countries for decades. Instead of addressing these legitimate Somali grievances, Ethiopia has resorted to military aggression, further exacerbating the situation.

The AU, UN, and other international organizations and nations have a responsibility to condemn such aggressive actions and uphold international law. However, their reluctance to take a strong stance against Ethiopia’s actions has only emboldened the country to commit further faults. By only calling for restraint and for respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, these organizations and nations are not living up to their mandate of promoting peace and stability.

For example, in 2006, when Ethiopia invaded Somalia to overthrow the Islamic Courts Union, the move was met with little condemnation from the international community. This lack of backlash only encouraged Ethiopia to continue its aggressive actions in Somalia, leading to further instability in the region.

In 2020, Ethiopia launched a military offensive in the Tigray region, leading to a humanitarian crisis and allegations of war crimes. Despite calls for accountability from the international community, there has been a lack of bold condemnation of Ethiopia’s actions. This failure to hold Ethiopia accountable for its aggression only served to embolden the country to commit further faults. Amhara region is presently experiencing exactly the same humanitarian fate.

In conclusion, the dangers of appeasement as a policy are clear in the case of Ethiopia’s aggressive attitude towards Somalia. The historical context of appeasement leading to devastating consequences should serve as a warning to the AU, UN, and other international organizations and nations. It is crucial for them to take a strong stance against Ethiopia’s actions and uphold international law to prevent further escalation of conflict and instability in the region. Failure to do so only encourages Ethiopia to continue its aggressive behavior, to the detriment of regional peace and security.
