KenGen readies rig for geothermal project in Djibouti

KenGen is finalising the set up of its drilling rig for drilling at the geothermal project site of Galla Le Koma in Djibouti.
Earlier this year, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) won a tender for a drilling contract in Djibouti, we reported. Now Kenyan news report that drilling on site in Djibouti is expected to kick off in June 2021.
The contract entails drilling of two geothermal wells for the Galla Le Koma geothermal project in the region of Lake Assal in Djibouti. The budget for the project is around USD 6.5 million. The project is being developed by the Djibouti Office of Geothermal Energy Development (ODDEG).
Preparations for drilling on site have gone well and are set up to 80% with a planned drilling start next month.
KenGen recently concluded drilling the first two wells for the Tulu Moye geothermal project in Ethiopia as part of a larger contract over a total of 8 wells, with each well costing around USD 5.8 million.
